About Us

The Hannah family and their business have been a large part of Shawnee's history and began about 1919 when Scottish immigrant Don Hannah, Sr. moved his family of 11 children to Shawnee to purchase the Primrose Coal Co. near McCuneville.

Nine years later in 1927, Hannah Brothers Furniture, Appliances & Hobby Shop began when Don Jr. and his brother Norvall opened a wallpaper and paint store in the Heidelbaugh building on East Main Street.

As the business grew, it moved across the street to the Whitmer's Tailor Shop building, which had been vacated in the early 1920s. During the '30s, the business expanded its operation to include appliances.

Next was the expansion into the "main store" and soon thereafter, furniture and radios were added to the line of merchandise. With Don busy selling furniture, appliances and radios, his sons Bruce and Lionel entered the business, picking up the painting and wallpapering trade their father had begun before they became needed in the store as salesmen. With their addition, the name "Hannah Brothers" was once again functional.

The expanded inventory and operation required more space and this worked out well with the increasing number of vacant buildings on East Main Street.

They purchased the K of P Opera House in the 1940s, moving their newly established carpet and linoleum business to the downstairs storefront and filling the second story with furniture.

The addition of televisions in the 1950s was the next step in development of the Hannah operation. By this time, they had become not only a household name but had established themselves regionally with a customer base throughout Southeastern and Central Ohio.

Additional buildings were added from the '50s to the '70s and most recently, the left side of the Williams-Ballie Building in the '90s.

Bruce and Lionel took over the business in the late '60s, although their father stayed involved in the business throughout the following decade.

In 1984, Bob took over the business. Then in 2002, Bob's son Shawn was added to the workforce. As of now, Shawn has taken over most of the buying and selling as well as the many other jobs it takes to conduct a small business. In Addition, Shawn has added a new section to the business which includes all things hobby.

Customer service is our main goal. If we treat our customers better than our competition, they'll come back again and again and they will share our name with others.
